Is my business fulfilling me?

It’s that time of year again, isn’t it? When we all start reflecting on the past twelve months and thinking ahead to what the new year might bring. This time last year [2018] I was in a very different headspace to now. I knew I wasn’t happy in my old business, and wanted change, but I didn’t really know what that meant or looked like. It was also hard to accept I would be turning away from years of hard work and passion, in building up my first business…but I was certain I needed to find a different path. It took me a few months to work out exactly what I wanted and needed to do, but ultimately it came down to some very basic questions. The most important of all: is my business fulfilling me?

To me, the question ‘is my business fulfilling me?’ touches on many things: my happiness, the sustainability of my business model, my working hours, my interaction with others, my mental health, the bigger picture of life outside my business. Yes, each element is important, but I wouldn’t have decided to entirely change career based on just one. Instead, looking at everything as a whole and working out if my business was fulfilling me – gave me the answer I needed to spark change.

I won’t go into the details of moving from my first business to this, my dream, business because you can read more about the story in a previous post: ‘A Career of Joy and Fulfilment’. I will say, however, accepting the truth (‘no, my business is not fulfilling me’) opened my eyes to what I actually wanted to do in my career and life. Then, and only then, did everything start slotting into place.

Ask yourself the question...

If you’re reflecting on last year, feeling like something needs to change, and looking ahead to next year  wondering where you are heading – ask yourself the question. Shying away from it, won’t help achieve your goals. Denying yourself the truth, won’t make your dreams come true.

You might find the answer is ‘no’ but be able to see a clear way to rectify things and bring back that sense of fulfilment. Maybe you just need to tweak your business model, spend more time doing things you love outside of work, or rebrand to align with your joys in life.

Since starting this business, earlier this year [2019], I’ve worked with some creative and inspiring clients on their visual branding. The key to each project, however, (whether for an entirely new business or a rebrand) was the client being clear on what they actually wanted – what they believed would fulfil them. Yes, visual branding can help share your message and connect with clients, but a beautiful new logo, carefully considered colour palette, and fresh set of fonts cannot fulfil you. The only thing that can do that is making sure every aspect of your business feels right, for you.

I understand what it’s like to feel frustrated and disappointed in your business. I also know, all too well, what it’s like to live with a ‘grey cloud’ overhead…but if I can live a more creative, light, and fulfilling life, then why can’t you?
